The convergence of culture, parenting and mental illness: Looking at the impact on the infant Presented by Lisa Bolger Senior Parent Infant Mental Health Specialist, Parent Infant Mental Health Initiative (PIMHI)

This seminar will explore the protective effect of cultural practices, and what happens if families become cut off from the cultural framework, that supplies them and keeps them operational. Mothers with mental illness/ trauma often have lost the cultural framework, and practices become rigid and are not effective. The complexity of working with
families with mental illness and their babies will be explored and thought about. The presentation will explore the risk to the baby and discuss interventions that try and address the overlapping issues of culture, parenting and mental illness. A short video will be shown and discussed, that illustrates the challenges and rewards of working with this population.

The seminar will be followed by a transcultural case study presented by Dr Patrick O’Brien, Psychiatry Registrar at St Vincent's Hospital. The case presentation is for clinicians, consumer consultants, and carer consultants only.

Transcultural Case Presentation for clinicians only: 4.15 - 5.15 pm.
