Claudio arrived in Australia from Chile in 1990, as a political prisoner after spending 10 years fighting the Pinochet dictatorship.
Claudio shared his story of recovery after hitting rock bottom at a special MMHA consultation with consumers, carers, service providers, academics and government officials in Hobart during the recent FECCA conference.

Beyond Resilience: Tasmanian CALD communities

Martin Harris from the University of Tasmania was invited to address MMHA's special consultation with consumers, carers, services providers and government officials in Hobart recently.
Mr Harris is an academic at the University's Department of Rural Health and has been involved in mental health research since joining the department in 1999.
He is the Tasmanian representative for the National Community and Expert Forum on suicide prevention, and Board member for Suicide Prevention Australia as well as a member of the Australian Board of Certified Counsellors.
Mr Harris is currently completing his Ph.D. where his research topic is ‘Beyond resilience: thriving in geographically dislocating transitions’.
He addressed the consultation about the resilience of Tasmania's CALD communities.

Helen Hutchinson spoke to the MMHA consultation in Hobart about her research project ‘Exploring Ideas of Health with African Refugee Women in Tasmania’.
A PhD candidate at the University of Tasmania, her work provides a qualitative study which aims to examine the lived experiences of African refugee women in Tasmania and involving these women to help identify
strategies for change in the health system.
Helen's project focuses on the health experiences of refugee women outside a medical or policy framework.
