Improving the lives through shared experiences of young mental health carers
The Mental Health Council of Australia (MHCA) is holding a workshop on 19 August 2008 to hear and record the real life experiences of young mental health carers (aged 13-25 years) who care for a parent living with a mental illness.
The Workshop will give young mental health carers the opportunity to hear from and speak to other young carers who care for parents living with a mental illness.
Participants will be able to talk about their experiences and what helps them to be a young mental health carer. The MHCA has invited a panel of three local guest speakers, who will also provide the carers an opportunity to form links with local services.
The MHCA will use the experiences and information from the workshops to develop an annual snapshot of mental health carers including the experiences of young carers. This snapshot will help work towards creating better outcomes for young mental health carers and demonstrate, over time, improvements for young carers and where more work needs to be done.
The MHCA says the workshop will be an empowering experience as young mental health carers will not only have the opportunity to share and learn, but also give the MHCA information to advance the issue and needs of young mental health carers in Australia at the national level.
The MHCA invites young mental health carers from all backgrounds and all areas to attend this workshop where young mental health carers will be asked to talk about issues they think need to be measured over time. The wider the experience of participants, the more diverse experiences will be heard and used to improve policy and programs for young mental health carers nationally.
If you wish to attend the workshop, please contact Nerrelle Goad by emailing: comic.australiafoundation@y7mail.com for further details and an application form.
Please note: The Young Mental Health Carer Workshop is limited to 20 attendees. Please apply early to guarantee that you will be accepted and be able to attend the workshop.
