MMHA Chair grows mo for Movember

last modified 18/11/2008 10:17

MMHA Chair, A/Prof Abd Malak, is growing a mo for Movember.

Abd Movember_1That's right - he has joined other Aussie men in an attempt to bring the mo back. A/Prof Malak has committed to Movember because he feels very passionate about tackling men's health issues and being proactive in the fight against men's depression and prostate cancer.

Last year in Australia, 18,700 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 2,900 died of prostate cancer - that's equivalent to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually.

Meanwhile statistics indicate that depression affects 1 in 6 men. But sadly, many men do not seek help. This is very concerning as untreated depression is a leading risk factor for suicide.

Therefore, Movember aims to raise awareness around men's health issues and raise funds for carefully selected partners that focus on prostate cancer and depression in men.

Since its inception as a formal charity in 2004, Movember has raised over $30million globally. This has helped significantly increase awareness of prostate cancer and depression, and has also helped change men's attitude towards their health.

Movember's current beneficiary partners in Australia are the The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue: the national depression initiative

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) aims to reduce the impact of prostate cancer on Australian men, their partners, their families and the community. The money raised by Movember is used by the PCFA to:  Abd Movember_2

  1. Fund research into the causes, detection, diagnosis and improved treatment of prostate cancer.
  2. Provide information, support and counseling to those affected by prostate cancer.
  3. Raise community awareness of the incidence of prostate cancer, thereby encouraging earlier detection and more effective treatment of the disease.

beyondblue: the national depression initiative aim is to increase the communities awareness of depression and address the associated stigma of living with depression. The money raised by Movember is dedicated to improving men's health in rural, remote, regional and metro areas across Australia by supporting men's health projects.

The PCFA and beyondblue will put money raised to fund research and increase support networks for those men who suffer from prostate cancer and depression.
