Greens Senator Kerry Nettle has visited the Glenside Psychiatric Hospital in Adelaide to check up on the mental health of immigration detainees at the facility.
She says in one case, a 34-year-old man from Bangladesh now suffers from a mental illness and diabetes as a result of being in detention.
Ms Nettle says the man is pinning his hopes on the Ombudsman, who is looking into Australia's immigration policies, to recommend his release.
"I found a man who's very disillusioned by Australia," she said.
"He arrived here in 1999 expecting, given Australia's democracy and human rights record, he may be welcomed as a refugee and six years and seven months later he's still locked up in detention."
