States' cooperation needed to fix mental health, says PM

last modified 03/08/2006 17:15

The Prime Minister is hoping for more cooperation from the states to fix what he calls "ridiculous" blockages in mental health services.

John Howard will discuss the issue with state and territory leaders at a meeting early next month in Canberra.

The Prime Minister wants the states to be tougher on drugs, such as marijuana, that have been linked to mental health problems.

Mr Howard has also told Southern Cross radio he hopes state laws hampering the recognition of qualifications can be fixed.

"I hope we can address a few areas in health that can be made more cooperative," he said.

"I hope that we can get rid of this absurd situation where a trade qualification obtained in Western Australia is not automatically valid in New South Wales or Queensland although it may be in London, I mean that is ridiculous in 2006."
