As part of the 2nd WA Transcultural Mental Health Conference, Broadening the Horizons, Hunter Institute of Mental Health in conjunction with Multicultural Mental Health Australia, presents a half-day workshop facilitated by Jaelea Skehan, Mindframe Program Manager, with input from multicultural mental health experts and multicultural media representatives, to be held in Perth, on November 15.

This pre-conference workshop will look at the impact the media can have on community perceptions of and attitudes towards mental health issues – including both suicide and mental illness.  The workshop will provide an overview of best practice principles of reporting mental illness and suicide and highlight opportunities for the multicultural mental health sector and other key stakeholders to influence this reporting in positive ways.

The workshop will be relevant to any consumers, carers or health workers with an interest in working with media, or interested in media representations of suicide and mental illness.  It will provide an overview of key considerations when working with the media with a specific focus on multicultural mental health and health promotion.

This workshop will be based on key issues presented in new resources developed under the National Mindframe Initiative  (available at www.mindframe-media.info/mentalhealth).

Cost: $25 + GST ($27.50)
