As part of the 2nd WA Transcultural Mental Health Conference, Broadening the Horizons, Multicultural Mental Health Australia presents a half-day workshop by Greg Turner, psychologist and Education Cooridnator, Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre, to be held in Perth, on November 15.

This interactive workshop will cover:

  • The technical question of accuracy of interpretation - what constitutes an accurate interpretation?
  • How different concerns and investments in the clinical consultation affect accuracy.
  • How language is imbedded within culture and how interpretation needs to be culturally contextual.
  • The need for connotative interpretation in mental health settings and how this can be achieved.
  • Clinicians and interpreters as colleagues in understanding.
  • The triangular relationship amongst practitioner, interpreter, and client.
  • The dynamics of the ongoing relationship between interpreter and mental health practitioner and how this helps or hinders ongoing work.
