What we do
As a statewide, specialist tertiary service, the primary objective of the West Australian Transcultural Mental Health Centre (WATMHC) is to deliver a service that is culturally responsive
and culturally sensitive to meet the needs of members of Western Australia's culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.
Background
The West Australian Transcultural Mental Health Centre (WATMHC), originally known as the Transcultural Psychiatry Unit (TPU),
was established following the closure of the Multicultural Psychiatric Centre in 1993. In March 2002, the service was officially renamed
the West Australian Transcultural Mental Health Centre to better reflect its wide range of activities which goes beyond clinical service delivery.
The Centre has a statewide function. It aims to bring about a culturally-sensitive response to migrant mental health needs. The Centre's operations
are further enhanced by its inclusion in a national network of Transcultural Mental Health Centres and key agencies in the transcultural mental health field around Australia.
